Nutritious Cattle Feed: Cottonseed Cake, Coconut Cake, Bhusa and More

Quality cattle feed is essential for healthy livestock and strong rural livelihoods. In India, by-product feeds like cottonseed cake, coconut (copra) cake, rice straw (bhusa) and raw cottonseed are widely used. Cottonseed cake is especially valued as a high-protein supplement: it contains roughly 30–50% protein (dry basis) depending on processing feedipedia.org. In India’s cotton belt, cottonseed meal (cake) is the main protein source for dairy cattle feedipedia.org. Its balanced protein and fat help boost milk yields when fed appropriately. Coconut cake (what remains after extracting oil from copra) is lower in protein (around 20–25%) feedipedia.org but rich in energy and fiber. It is commonly fed to ruminants as an economical energy supplement.

However, it’s important to manage these feeds correctly. Both cottonseed and coconut cakes are oilseed by-products, so they can spoil if too moist or hot. Feed must be kept dry (moisture below ~12%) feedipedia.org. Also, cottonseed contains gossypol, a natural toxin. Mature cattle tolerate low levels, but feed rates are typically limited (often ≤15% of the diet) to avoid toxicity feedipedia.org. For safety, traders and farmers should source cake from reliable mills and inspect for signs of mold or rancidity.

Bhusa (rice straw) and other roughages round out the diet by providing bulk fiber. Note that rice straw is low quality – only ~3–5% protein – so it’s usually mixed with richer feeds or treated (e.g., with urea or alkali) to improve nutrition fao.org fao.org. Although not nutritious on its own, chopped straw helps cattle chew and digest other feeds more effectively.

Modern cattle feeding emphasizes balance: energy, protein, minerals and water. Farmers often mix these ingredients (cakes, forage, concentrates) to meet their herd’s needs. When done properly, this results in healthier animals and better yields. By working with suppliers who understand feed quality, livestock keepers can ensure nutritious diets for their cows. Properly mixed feeds keep cows strong and productive, directly supporting rural farm incomes.
